Coalville Town 6 Ashby 3

Coalville saw off the challenge of North West Leicestershire rivals in an entertaining game at King Edward VII College in Coalville.

Town started the game brightly and took the lead inside the opening two minutes when Phil Sign slipped Chris Vernon away and he slotted home past the Ashby keeper.

Both sides then began to settle down, but it was Coalville who were to strike again next. Vernon and Liam McArthur combined to set Ryan Mason away and he made no mistake with the finish.

Ashby fought back though and got a goal midway through the first half, but Coalville then moved up the gears to restore their two goal lead. Town were awarded a penalty corner and Mason produced a drag flick effort which the Ashby keeper parried away, only for Vernon to come in on the volley and smash the ball high into the top corner with rocket-like force for a spectacular goal.

Back came Ashby again, though, and some slack marking allowed the visitors to score another goal. Coalville keeper Paul Marston's goal soon came under further pressure and he was forced into a couple of saves, before Coalville again regained control with a fourth goal, Vernon completing his hat-trick by turning home Brian Robinson's pass.

The second half saw the game tighten up a little bit, but it was Coalville who struck early again. This time a defender's foot on the line denied Coalville a goal and a penalty stroke was awarded. Sign stepped up and converted the stroke to make it 5-2.

Ashby came back again, though, with a good goal of their own when a forward was allowed too much time at the top of the dee and despatched the ball into the top corner of the goal.

But Coalville had the final word, with Vernon again putting the finishing touch to a flowing move to secure a reasonably convincing win for Coalville over their local rivals.
