18 November 2006 Six-up seconds demolish Derby Coalville Town 2nd XI 6 Derby Asterdale 2nd XI 1 DTZ 2nd XI East Midlands Division One Andy Whitby's treble helped Coalville's seconds to a big win against lowly Derby Asterdale in their latest DTZ East Midlands Division One clash. Coalville again fielded a strong and experienced side, that was bolstered by the return in midfield of Phil Sign after completing a transfer back from county rivals Melton. Alongside Tony Crowie and Brent Clamp, Town soon had no trouble gaining control in the centre of the park, and began to create opportunities for the front men. After missing a hatful of early chances, leading scorer Niki Arnold was summoned off the bench. A penalty corner a few moments later saw the ball come to Arnold's stick and he made no mistake, blasting the ball home past the Derby keeper. It had been all one way traffic, but Coalville then got out. A rare error in midfield allowed Derby to catch Town on the break, and the ball was played to the left of the dee where a forward expertly lifted the ball over the advancing Joel Barker and into the Coalville goal. Undeterred, Coalville came straight back at Asterdale and four minutes had regained the lead. Glen Marston and Scott Meadows combined on the right and Marston played a great ball through for Arnold who ran into the dee and placed a simple shot past the keeper. Town then made it 3-1 with arguably the goal of the game on 32 minutes. Having won a long corner, the ball was played into Whitby who then produced a superb reverse stick shot that hammered into the far corner of the goal, giving the Derby keeper no chance. Coalville made a poor start to the second half, allowing Derby to come back into the game. However, the defence of Marston, Carl Marshall, Ian Wright and Steve Partner cleaned most of the play up, though, and even when they were beaten Barker was on hand to come out bravely and clear. Town then upped the pressure and the Derby keeper was soon being forced into some good saves to keep Coalville from adding to the score. He was eventually beaten again on 55 minutes when a penalty corner was played into the path of Sign who placed his shot past the diving Derby keeper for a goal on his return. It was now all Coalville, and they made it five when Whitby thundered home another penalty corner. The same player then completed his hat-trick two minutes from time with another penalty corner strike. Coalville now have to put their promotion push from DTZ East Midlands Division One on ice for a week as they face an inter-league friendly against East Midlands Premier Division side Warwick University on Saturday. |
