Super six on Saturday, but smashed on Sunday Mansfield 3rd XI 3 Coalville Town 3rd XI 6 Warwick University 3rd XI 5 Coalville Town 3rd XI 0 Bodykraft 3rd XI East Midlands Premier Division Coalville's third string picked up only their fourth win of the season with a crucial victory over fellow strugglers Mansfield. But they couldn't match Saturday's feat against promotion-chasing Warwick University on Sunday with a weakened team, containing a number of young players. Town started Saturday's game in attacking mood, with Steve Partner, Chris Pearson, Mark Webster and Jordan Ward controlling the midfield. But they soon suffered a huge blow - conceding two goals against the run of play to give Mansfield a 2-0 lead and seemingly leave Town with a mountain to climb to effectively stay in the division. But they quickly got back in it after the break when Pearson fed Dean Pallett who calmly slotted home past the Mansfield keeper. This gave Town new incentive, and they soon levelled the scores when Gaz Toyer slipped Carl Clay in and he slotted home. Coalville now had teeth to their play, and the defence of Toyer, Jaswinder Randhawa, Simon Calkin and Jason Sign were gelling, meaning Stuart Burton in goal only faced a couple of opportunities. Town soon took the lead when good work from Clay and Pallett resulted in the award of a penalty corner. The ball was played out to Clay, who's strike rebounded to the stick of Dave Mee for him to slot home to give Coalville the lead for the first time. But the lead proved shortlived, Mansfield levelling from a penalty corner which Town were unfortunate to concede. The game was now going at a frenetic pace as both sides needed the win. Coalville continued to press hard and got the advantage when Mansfield were reduced to ten men. A mazy run and shot from a tight angle by Pearson then restored Town's lead at 4-3. But Town knew one goal may not be enough, so they promptly sewed the game up with two more goals. First a pass from the top of the circle found Ward and he slotted home past the keeper to make it 5-3, and then a good run from Pallett allowed him to be found in the area and again beat the home keeper and score his second to secure a very important win. However, Town couldn't repeat their performance on a freezing cold Sunday morning in Warwick. Despite putting in a brave performance, featuring young players like Adam Mills, Sam Bingley and Josh McArthur, Coalville were soon 3-0 down. They had a chance to get back into it, Mills unlucky not to score. Good defending from Bingley, Randhawa, Sign and Darren Ward, and some fine saves from Greg Tongue in goal, kept Warwick out for the rest of the first half. The second half saw Town under siege, but they hung on grimly. The Students managed to grab two more goals to seal a 5-0 win, but it had been a gutsy performance from the Coalville side in less than pleasant conditions. Coalville face Northampton Saints on Saturday in what is a must win game if they are to stay in this division. |
