Toyer treble as thirds hit seventh heaven

Sikh Union (Coventry) 3rd XI  1  Coalville Town 3rd XI  7

DTZ 3rd XI East Midlands Division One

Coalville's third string continued their promotion push in DTZ East Midlands Division One as they smashed seven past bottom of the table Sikh Union (Coventry).

Town started out strongly and got in front after around 10 minutes when Chris Pearson picked the ball up and dribbled around the back, beating three Coventry defenders before slotting the ball home past the home keeper, for an excellent individual goal.

Coalville weren't at their best at this point, but extended their lead on the 20 minute mark when they were awarded a penalty corner. Pearson pushed the ball out for Carl Clay, who produced a trademark flick into the top corner of the goal to make it 2-0.

But Town then slackened off a bit, and allowed Coventry to come back into the game. And they made Coalville pay, with a player producing some excellent stick skills to dance through the Town defence and slide the ball past Greg Tongue in the Coalville goal.

But the two goal cushion was restored by the interval when Gareth Toyer managed to get the final touch to the ball after a goalmouth scramble.

The second half was all Coalville, and Clay and Toyer both could have added several more goals to the scoreline with steadier finishing. But Toyer did get on the scoresheet again, when he latched onto Pete Pitt's pass to slot home passed the Coventry keeper.

A penalty corner a few minutes later made it 5-1 to Town. Skipper Darren Conway laid the ball into the path of Mark Webster, who fired a cross-cum-shot to the far post for Pearson to turn home his second of the game.

Coalville were now heavily on top, and it really wasn't any surprise when they made it 6-1. Another penalty corner was played out to Clay, and he slipped it to Conway who struck home his third goal of the season - one more than his normal season average!

Town wrapped up the win with a seventh, and Toyer's hat-trick goal. The influential Webster went on a run beating a number of Coventry players, firing an effort across goal which Toyer was on hand to turn home.

Coalville will hope to keep this form up when fellow promotion contenders Derwent visit King Edward VII College on Saturday.
