Thirds celebrate promotion with seven

Coalville's promotion back to the DTZ East Midlands Premier Division was confirmed following this thumping win over bottom of the table Sikh Union (Coventry).

Coalville flew out of the blocks, knowing a win was needed to keep their bid for the East Midlands Division One title on track. Inside five minutes, Town had the lead when Carl Clay produced a trademark drag flick from a penalty corner to give Coalville the lead.

Town continued to pile the pressure on their opponents, and a little over five minutes later had doubled their advantage. Another Clay drag flick was saved by the Sikh Union keeper, but leading scorer Gareth Toyer was on hand to bundle the rebound into the goal.

It quickly became 3-0 when Clay reacted quickest in a scramble to turn and fire the ball home, and then 4-0 when Clay completed his hat-trick with a ferocious strike after a good pass from Chris Pearson.

Sikh Union fought back after this, and Simon Wyatt did well to clear one effort off the line from a penalty corner, but moments before the half-time whistle the visitors did get on the scoresheet with a well worked goal.

The second half wasn't vintage Coalville, but they still had enough to score another couple of fine goals. Shortly after the restart, a great pass from Dave Mee allowed Toyer race through and round the keeper and fire home to make it 5-1.

A few moments later it became six when captain Darren Conway exchanged passes with Clay to set Clay in and his shot flew into the bottom corner to make it 6-1 and take Clay's tally for the game to four.

After this Coalville shut up shop, with the defence of Wyatt, Adam Whitehall, Simon Calkin and Andy Greaves never really looking troubled, and well supported by the hard working Simon Clare in midfield.

Skipper Darren Conway then rounded off the scoring with the seventh with around five minutes to go.
