Thirds continue their winning ways

Coalville remain on course to win the DTZ East Midlands Division One after a hard fought win over Leamington on Sunday.

Town put in a strong defensive display to over power their opponents and move closer to clinching promotion. Coalville started brightly and were soon pinning the home side back in their own half.

The deadly duo up front, Gareth Toyer and Carl Clay, were causing all kinds of havoc in the Leamington defence, and after 10 minutes Town found the breakthrough.

A penalty corner was played out to Clay, who slipped into the path of Dave Mee who struck home low into the bottom corner.

Town continued to pluck away, and with the defence of Andy Greaves, Adam Whitehall, Simon Calkin and Simon Wyatt in particularly mean mood, Leamington posed little threat.

Five minutes after the opener, Town had doubled their advantage. Quick thinking from Chris Pearson at a free hit allowed him to play the ball to Clay who fired home low into the bottom corner.

It stayed that way until half-time, although Toyer could have added to the scoreline when he got through one-on-one with the keeper, but was denied.

Leamington hit back early in the second half with a good move and finish that left Greg Tongue with no chance in the Coalville goal to make it 2-1.

Toyer again went close for Town, while Tongue had to be at his best to deny a Leamington player in a one-on-one situation.

Coalville then killed the game with a third goal midway through the half. Simon Clare picked the ball up on the left and slipped it to Pearson. Some intricate passing between Pearson and Toyer ended with the former playing the ball across goal for Toyer to slide home the decisive third goal.

With four games to go, a win against bottom of the table Sikh Union (Coventry) on Saturday may be enough to see the thirds clinch promotion.
