Fourths suffer narrow defeat

Melton 4th XI  2  Coalville Town 4th XI  1

DTZ Central League South East Division One

Coalville suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Leicestershire rivals Melton fourths in their latest DTZ Central League South East Division One fixture.

The result leaves Town winless in the division after three games, although the performance in this match was pleasing. Coalville started brightly and Dean Pallett soon saw a shot go narrowly wide.

Jordan Ward also saw a shot well saved by the Melton keeper. At the other end Richard Jones made a couple of decent saves to keep out Melton efforts.

James Ewing and Craig Deacon were combining well in the centre of the park, and it was a good pass that enabled Darren Ward to fire home the opening goal of the game from a couple of yards out.

Melton fought back hard, though, and two minutes before the interval a penalty corner brought the home side an equaliser.

The second half proved to be similarly tight, with both sides having chances to win the game. Darren Ward again went close, while Matt Howes just failed to get enough purchase on a shot following Jordan Ward's through ball.

Pallett soon hit a blistering shot that left a Melton defender with a nasty hand injury, so the game was delayed while the player obtained treatment. With 10 minutes to go, the home side managed to get their winner, another penalty corner strike which despite Deacon's best efforts to keep it out, still managed to creep in.

Town will hope to pick up their first win they host Northampton Saints 4ths on Saturday.
