Coalville clean up in local derbies

Coalville won all four of the matches played at the weekend against north west Leicestershire rivals Ashby.

Town's first team defeated their Ashby counterparts at Ivanhoe School 6-2. Coalville started brightly and led 2-0 at the break, thanks to strikes from Brian Robinson and Matt McRobbie. They extended the lead to 4-0, Ryan Mason and Chris Vernon finding the target, before Ashby started to show some spirit and grabbed a couple of goals back.

But Town weren't to be denied the final word, scoring twice more before the final whistle. First McRobbie thundered home another penalty corner, before Mason added the gloss to the scoreline with an extravagant reverse stick strike into the far corner to seal a comfortable win in the warm-up to the East Midlands Premier Division season.

Things got even worse for Ashby in the 2nd XI game, although it did look good for the home side at the interval with the score at 0-0.

But almost straight from the restart Town got ahead through a goal from skipper Tony Crowie, and Coalville never looked back from then on. Andy Whitby doubled the Coalville lead before Mike Browbank made it 3-0.

Ashby were now looking a ragged outfit, and a fourth goal came through Brent Clamp. Whitby grabbed his second to make it 5-0, and the same player then completed his hat-trick with a thunderous strike to make it 6-0.

Crowie added his second with a drag flick penalty corner to make it 7-0, before Browbank got his second with a goal with the last hit of the match to make it 8-0.

The third XI game at King Edward VII College in Coalville  was a tighter affair, but Coalville again came out on top with a narrow 2-1 win. Chris Woodard and Liam McCarthy getting the goals for Coalville.

And the fourth string rounded off the clean sweep, winning 3-2. Carl Clay struck twice for Town, with Ash Wootton getting the decider.
