Fourths see off Saints

Coalville's fourth string romped to an impressive win against a Northampton Saints side who started the day above them in the BodyKraft Central League South East Division One.

Town started brightly and applied pressure from the off. Adam Martin, Matt Wooldridge and Josh McArthur were seeing plenty of the ball in the midfield and were soon providing chances for Carl Clay and Ezra Watson up front.

Clay soon saw a couple of efforts at penalty corners go over, while a McArthur shot was well saved by the Saints keeper. At the other end, Stuart Burton was largely not called on as the defence of Sean Rigley, Tom Sloan, Simon Wyatt and Jack Butcher kept Northampton's attack at bay.

Coalville's superiority was eventually rewarded when Clay finally found his range at penalty corners - thumping a fierce shot against the backboard to make it 1-0. It remained that way at half time, although Town knew they should have probably added to the scoreline.

The second half continued in much the same vein, with Coalville controlling the game and playing some lovely hockey. Martin was up and down the pitch in his usual energetic style, while Wooldridge and McArthur continued to provide real quality on either flank.

Town doubled their advantage when Clay again netted after a well-worked penalty corner, and the Coalville forward then completed his hat-trick with a well hit shot after a good run from McArthur.

The only blot on the copy book came shortly after Town had gone 3-0 up when Wyatt's hit out gifted possession to a Saints forward and he raced away to slot past Burton to make it 3-1.

But the final word was deservedly Coalville's when, with only seconds left on the clock, Ezra Watson scrambled home the fourth goal at the far post after a good cross from Wooldridge had split the defence.

An impressive win which keeps Coalville going in the right direction in the league table.
