10th March 2007 Local derby ends in stalemate Coalville Town 5th XI 0 Ashby 4th XI 0 DTZ Central League South East Division Two Coalville arguably had the better of this north west Leicestershire derby and were unlucky not to snatch all three points in the final minute. Town were a little slow to start, but from around the 15 minute mark onwards they shaded a tightly contested match against promotion-chasing Ashby. There were few obvious chances for either side in the first half, with Adam Lloyd and Adam Martin battling hard in the centre of midfield and the defence of Liam Bates, Tom Sloan, Chris Ashton and Sean Rigley looking solid. As the first half came to a close, Coalville began to get more and more of the play and won a few penalty corners, but James Dumelow and Simon McArthur couldn't get the killer touch. Josh McArthur was having an effective game on the wing and began to turn his marker inside out in the second half, while Kristian Webb was his usual effervescent self in midfield. The main drama came right at the end. Coalville won a penalty corner and from the resulting effort the keeper first saved a shot, a defender then managed to scramble a follow up off the line, before another defender then used his foot to save a goalbound shot, resulting in a penalty stroke. Sloan stepped up to take the stroke, and despite getting some power on the effort and sending the Ashby keeper the wrong way, the keeper managed to get a flailing part of his body onto the ball to keep Sloan's effort out and deny Coalville all three points. Coalville finish their season next weekend with a rearranged trip to Jaguar Coventry fourths on Saturday. |
