Sixths come out on top

Coalville's sixth string came out on top in the inter-club derby in the Bodykraft Central League South East Division Two.

The more experienced sixth string came out strongly early on, and were soon applying pressure on the fifth string back four, with Sam Bingley and Tom Kelly putting in some good challenges. James Ewing and Ahren Parry in the sixths midfield were proving to be a handful, and were getting the better of the young fifth string midfield.

After around 10 minutes the sixths took the lead when a neat pass through allowed Kristian Webb to slot home the opening goal. Five minutes later and the in-form sixth string had doubled their advantage when Parry burst forward down the right and fired towards goal, where Matt Howells just slid in ahead of Bingley to bundle the ball over the line.

The fifths began to get back into the game as Jack Harcourt, Adam Mills and Russell Hallam began to see more of the ball, and Josh Bates soon saw a well struck shot well saved by Stuart Burton in the sixths goal.

Both sides turned around with the score at 2-0, and although the sixths continued to create more, the fifths began to come more and more back into it. Mills soon saw a shot go narrowly wide, but in the main the experience of Martin Saunt and Craig Deacon in the sixths defence was proving difficult to break through, ably supported by Leon Poxon.

Ewing continued to be a handful, and one mazy run was only thwarted at the end by a fine tackle from Ward. But the fifths kept plugging away and a good pass from Hallam allowed Garrigan to create a bit of space and fire towards goal. But the young Town forward saw his effort thwarted by Saunt's challenge.

Burton was called on to deny the same player at a penalty corner, while Hallam also saw another effort go just wide of the post for the fifths.

In the end, it was a deserved win for the sixths which takes them up into fourth place in the table, and above the fifths for the first time this season.
