Fifths pick up first win

Coalville Town 5th XI  1  Kettering 4th XI  0

DTZ Central League South East Division Two

Coalville's fifth string picked up a well-deserved first win against a more experienced Kettering side.

A superb goal by Matt Wooldridge was enough to secure the win, Coalville's first goal of the season so far. Kettering started the game brightly and were soon putting pressure on the Town defence. Chris Ashton and Tom Sloan at the centre of defence stood firm though to repel the visitors attacks.

At the other end, Town were playing the ball around well, with Adam Martin and Adam Lloyd combining well in the centre of midfield to give James Dumelow a half chance up front, but the Town forward saw his effort blocked.

On the flanks, David Lorrimer and Josh McArthur were both busy, and McArthur went close to opening the scoring, picking the ball up on the halfway line, tying a Kettering defender up in knots before seeing his shot flash just wide.

With around 25 minutes gone, Coalville found the goal with a special strike from Wooldridge. Lloyd and Martin scrapped for the ball in the centre of the park and managed to slip the ball to Wooldridge. He controlled the ball on his reverse side before dribbling around a defender and unleashing a fierce shot from a tight angle that crashed against the top of the backboard.

Coalville kept playing after this, and cheered on by a large crowd, could have extended their lead in the second half. Wooldridge was again the spark and it was his through ball that Dumelow a good chance, but his shot went narrowly wide.

Kristian Webb also saw an effort go wide, while McArthur forced a decent save out of the Kettering keeper with another strike on goal. Late on Kettering began to pressurise the Town goal, and Coalville keeper Stuart Burton was forced into a couple of good saves to keep the visitors at bay.

But time ran out for Kettering, and Coalville's youngsters could taste victory for the first time. And it's definitely no less than they deserve. It's a tough trip to league leaders Nuneaton fifths on Saturday for the fifth string, who'll be looking to add more points to their tally.
