Fifths claim third scalp of the season

Coalville Town 5th XI  1  Nuneaton 6th XI  0

DTZ Central League South East Division Two

Coalville's fifth string continued to prove themselves to be the DTZ Central League South East Division Two's young upstarts by defeating a vastly more experienced Nuneaton side at King Edward VII College on Saturday.

Although Town perhaps didn't quite reach the heights of their performance at Melton the previous weekend, they still played well enough to pick up all three points and move up at least two places in the table.

Adam Martin and Adam Lloyd were working hard in the centre of midfield, and the trickery of Josh McArthur and Matt Wooldridge on the flanks was causing Nuneaton problems.

Coalville controlled much of the game and hogged the possession throughout the game. But Town were finding it difficult to break through the 11 man wall of a Nuneaton defence - it was, after all, the first time most of the Town youngsters will have come across such tactics.

Coalville's defence of Ezra Watson, Tom Sloan, Chris Ashton and Sean Rigley remained strong throughout, limiting chances for the visitors.

Town won one or two penalty corners, and Simon McArthur went close to getting a goal from one of the efforts. Kristian Webb and James Dumelow both had half chances, but opportunities were limited for both sides.

It wasn't until 10 minutes from the end that Coalville broke the deadlock. Sam Edwards picked the ball up in the centre of the park and broke into the dee before striking the ball past the Nuneaton keeper for his first-ever goal in Town colours.

That set up a hard final few minutes for Town, though, as Nuneaton pressed hard for an equaliser. It took three superb saves from Stuart Burton in the Town goal to deny the visitors a share of the spoils.

But it's now two wins on the trot for the fifths, who will hope to make it three wins a row when they visit north west Leicestershire rivals Ashby fourths on Saturday.
