Brave fifths show their promise

Coalville Town 5th XI  0  Jaguar Coventry 4th XI  3

DTZ Central League South East Division Two

Coalville's new fifth string turned in a performance full of promise in their league debut fixture against Jaguar Coventry 4ths.

It wasn't enough to give Town any points, but the future is certainly bright for the club if the brand of hockey played by the fifths on Saturday can be developed over the course of the season.

Jaguar attacked from the off early and pressed Coalville back onto the defensive. After 10 minutes, the visitors broke the deadlock when a player managed to wriggle his way through a couple of Town tackles and fire home into the bottom corner.

But Coalville got stronger after this, with Adam Martin and Adam Lloyd in the centre of midfield battling tigerishly, and Ian Lorrimer and Josh McArthur combining superbly on the left flank, causing Jaguar all sorts of problems. Town were playing hockey way beyond their tender years. Tom Sloan was also superb at the back alongside the 'old head' of Chris Ashton.

But chances were few and far between, as the more experienced visitors made their experience tell. Despite the huge Coalville support at King Edward VII College for the Town youngsters, Jaguar did manage to grab a second with a well worked goal.

Jaguar then saw another effort cannon back off the post, and then saw a third goal count when a player batted the ball home.

Town did carve open a couple of chances, with Kristian Webb seeing a shot go wide and Ahren Parry also seeing an effort blocked by a Jaguar defender.

So, although the result went against Town, a pleasing display from the fifth team on their league debut against a significantly more experienced side. Town face another new side to the league on Saturday when they travel to take on Rugby 5ths.
