Town win again

Coalville Town 3 South Leicester 1

Leicester Summer League

Coalville Town fielded a more youthful looking side in their second Tuesday night Leicester Summer League fixture against a South Leicester side consisting of mainly young players with a sprinkling of experience.

Town proved to have more cutting edge than their opponents and could, in truth, have won by a clearer margin. But credit to South Leicester, whose young players put up a brave fight.

Coalville started brightly, with Brian Robinson going on a couple of mazy dribbles and Ryan Mason seeing an effort well saved by the South Leicester keeper.

But it was South Leicester who surprisingly struck first. A mistake at a hit out gifted the ball to a South Leicester player who rounded Coalville keeper Paul Marston and hit a cross-shot towards goal. Glen Marston tried to keep the ball out, but only ended up deflecting it into the goal.

That sparked Coalville into action, and typically it was Mason who brought Coalville level. A good interchange between Sam Crowie and Liam McArthur  created the opening for Mason to fire home past the South Leicester keeper.

Coalville now had their tails up, and shortly before the break they took the lead. Town won a free hit on the edge of the South Leicester dee and the ball found it's way to Liam McArthur, who hit a shot towards goal which the South Leicester keeper saved. But McArthur picked the ball up again and played it into the path of Matt Taylor, the son of former Coalville star Mark Taylor, who swept the ball home for a debut goal.

The pacy Taylor was soon causing further problems for the South Leicester defence, while the other two players making their debut at this level of hockey, Declan Turner and Josh McArthur, were both battling hard and show some excellent touches on the ball.

Town went in 2-1 up at the break, and not long after the restart they made it 3-1. A superb ball out of defence by Gareth Turner set Mason away on goal and the Town forward fired the ball home under the South Leicester keeper.

Mason had a couple of further chances to complete his second consecutive hat-trick, but this time the South Leicester keeper stood in his way with a couple of fine saves. At the other end, Coalville keeper Marston had to make a couple of smart saves to keep the Leicester side out.

But it was Town who went closest to adding a fourth. 'On loan' player for the evening from Leicester Thursday, Gavin Guest, winning a penalty corner for Town and then pushing the penalty corner effort against the South Leicester post.

Coalville team: Paul Marston; Glen Marston, Gareth Turner, Gavin Guest, James Unwin; Brian Robinson, Liam McArthur, Sam Crowie, Josh McArthur, Matt Taylor; Ryan Mason, Declan Turner.
